Issue Pickup Time Metric
The heartbeat of every product development pipeline begins with the sprint backlog (the "To Do" column). How quickly do issues get picked up? Do you end up with forever-todo issues? The Pickup Time metric allows product owners and scrum master to analyze the flow of development, starting with the ability to pickup new bodies of work.

What is the Issue Pickup Time Metric?
The Pickup Time metric calculates the average duration issues remain in "To Do"-like statuses (the list of statuses is configurable). Product teams are recommended to reduce and maintain the pickup time to turn their delivery pipeline into a consistent flow with a predictable output.
Strategies to Reduce the Issue Pickup Time
Move issues into development at the right time
A high pickup time may indicate that issues are moved out of the backlog into the "To Do" state too soon. It can be tiring for developers to see a never ending "To Do" column, which keeps piling up.
Properly size the number of pending issues
Make sure to adapt the number of items to be picked up based on the throughput of your team. This will also give more time to your product managers to refine issues before they are put into development.
Ensure issues are properly scoped and detailed enough
It may also indicate that the scope of issues is unclear. Developers tend to leave issues they are not sure about into the "To Do" state, until clarifications can be provided. In this case, try to involve engineers into the scoping of issues early on to ensure that the scope makes sense to them at a technical level.
